Pokhara is a place of remarkable natural beauty. The serenity of Phewa Lake and the magnificence of the fishtailed summit of Machhapuchhre (6,977m) rising behind it create an ambience of peace and magic. At an elevation lower than Kathmandu and generally a few degrees warmer, it has a tropical feel to it as can be seen by the diversity of beautiful subtropical flora which are found here.
Clearly however, the most stunning of Pokhara’s sights is the world famous views of the Himalayas, especially with the spectacular panorama of the Annapurna range which forms its backdrop. Stretching from east to west, the Annapurna massif includes Annapurna I to IV and Annapurna South. Although the highest among them is Annapurna I (8,091m), it is Machhapuchhre which dominates all others in this neighbourhood.
The major attractions are: Phewa Lake where one can sail or row boats, visit to the Barahi temple built almost in the middle of this lake, Bindhyavasini Temple dedicated to the Goddess Bhagwati (at both these temples, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, devotees can be seen offering male animals as sacrifices to the deities), the Natural History Museum which features displays on the peoples and wildlife of the Annapurna Conservation Area, the Tibetan Refugee Camp and excursion to Sarankot (to view the Himalayas closeup).
